What is hemorrhoid?

Hemorrhoid is an inflamed or swollen vein(s) at or near the anus, caused by too much pressure in the rectum which forces the blood to stretch thus inflating the veins, and sometimes rupturing them. 

Hemorrhoids may result from straining to move stool. Other contributing factors include pregnancy, aging, chronic constipation or diarrhea, and anal intercourse.

Hemorrhoids are either inside the anus (internal) or under the skin around the anus (external).

What are the symptoms of hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are not normally serious or dangerous and are not life threatening. In most cases, symptoms go away within a few days.  Although many people have hemorrhoids, not all have symptoms. There are two kinds of hemorrhoids:  internal hemorrhoids and external hemorrhoids.

The most common symptoms of internal hemorrhoids are bright red blood covering the stool, blood stains on toilet paper, or blood in the toilet bowl.  This is known as a protruding hemorrhoid.  You can't feel internal hemorrhoids because they are deep inside the rectum. Internal hemorrhoids are not serious. But since anal bleeding could mask a more serious condition like colorectal cancer, it's not a bad idea to consult your doctor to confirm what it really is.

However, for some people, hemorrhoids will grow and swell outside of the anus and form a small lump, becoming irritated and painful, and sometimes very itchy.  External hemorrhoids cause the majority of the symptoms:  pain, burning, itching, bleeding,  and may include painful swelling or a hard lump around the anus that results when a blood clot forms. This condition is known as a thrombosed external hemorrhoid.  Because external hemorrhoids cause you so much discomfort, they normally get the most attention.

Excessive straining, rubbing, or cleaning around the anus may cause irritation with bleeding and/or itching, which may produce a vicious cycle of symptoms. Draining mucus may also cause itching.

How to prevent hemorrhoids?

It would be nice to have a fool-proof method to prevent hemorrhoids, but there are circumstances that just cannot be avoided:  standing, sitting, giving birth, and so on.  So how do you get around these situations?

• Sitting or standing:  if your job requires to stand or sit for long periods, try to do the opposite whenever you can, during coffee breaks, at lunch time, etc.  Don't always sit or stand in the same position, shift your weight from one foot to the other, lean against a wall to prevent your weight from resting completely on your feet, change sitting position, or just walk around your desk or chair, stand up to look in the window.

• If you have to do some heavy lifting, do what athletes do and exhale when you're lifting, and never, ever hold your breath! If you have to pick up something on the floor, bend your knees rather than bending at the waist.

• Try to keep diarrhea and constipation under control.  If you're often constipated, make sure you eat a diet high in dietary fibre.  Green vegetables such as spinach and broccoli and many fruits like raspberries are high in fibre.  If you don't consume enough fibre in your foods, take supplements.  Not only will this help prevent hemorrhoids, it will also cure your constipation and help prevent more serious diseases such as colon cancer.

• NO reading on the toilet! Bowel movements shouldn't take any longer than a few minutes, 5 minutes maximum. Do what you have to do and get off the pot!
