Acne and how to care for acne skin

What is acne?

Acne is an inflammatory skin disorder or skin disease of the hair follicles and sebaceous glands resulting in black heads, pimples, cysts, abscesses, all of which can cause scarring of the skin.  Acne is found primarily on the facial area, however, it can spread to other parts of the body such as shoulders, back, and arms.  Acne is not caused by dirt, dust, or poor hygiene, although over-cleaning and washing the affected area can make acne worse by drying the skin and make it sore.  Sweating and humid conditions can also make acne worse.  Some blemish conditions are not curable, but can be 100% manageable to the point where you will not feel like you suffer from acne at all.  Read about the following myths that have people believe all kinds of things that are just not so.

Is acne age related?

To pop or not to pop

Trying to pop black heads may do the opposite of what you're trying to do.  It may make the pus and blood go deeper into the skin rather than making it come out.  This can result in scarring and cysts.  To squeeze a pimple, always make sure you wash your hands just before.  The best way to do this is with a sterilized needle to ensure that you only pierce the head of the pimple rather than from all sides by squeezing to pop it.  Once you have a small hole in the head of the pimple, GENTLY squeeze it to get all the pus out.  If you squeeze and play with it until there is no more pus and blood comes out, you may end up with a scar in that spot.

Is the scarring permanent?
